A regulatory body is mandated by government to regulate professionals in the interests of the public. It is required to protect the public by ensuring that professionals provide safe, competent and ethical care. It is accountable to the public, its members and the government and must follow government legislation. CSASK was granted self-regulatory status in 1992 and follows The Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists Act.
Self-regulation is based on the idea that deciding the qualifications required to practice safely and deciding whether a professional is a competent and ethical practitioner is best done by other members of that profession. Members of CSASK, along with legal counsel completed the companion College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists of Saskatchewan Bylaws which are continually being updated in order to ensure the public receives services from competent practitioners. The CSASK Code of Ethics has been created to provide practitioners with a basis for ethical practice and decision-making.
The Act, Bylaws and Code of Ethics are important tools for all regulatory bodies
